JULIA WHY? REVEAL THE SUBTLY DEVASTATING NEW SINGLE ‘STARMAN’
Less in-your-face but no less impactful, ‘Starman’ laments on madness and mental health. Soft, dark bass and vocals set the tone of the release, mixed with brighter guitars offering a break to the lyrical content.
Front woman and singer/songwriter/bassist Julia Wylie opens up about the track’s meaning, saying “This song traces my personal journey with madness. It is an homage to David Bowie, whose death in 2016 triggered hallucinations and a manic episode that eventually led to hospitalisation and a bipolar diagnosis. David Bowie became a transcendental source of strength while I battled and danced with my own demons.” She further defines her struggles in her letter published on Electric Lady HERE.
Previous single ‘Pocket’ was added to rotation on FBi Radio and gained fans in Pilerats, Happy Mag and Lunchbox TV jumping on board as early champions.
Julia Why? first broke onto the scene winning triple j unearthed’s NIDA competition, scoring them a video clip by the best up and comers in the biz for single ‘Just One Night’. Lead by rebel girl Julia Wylie, the band found fans in all corners of the globe, touring extensively through Australia and Canada. Their acclaimed debut record Wheel (2015) left their mark in America, reaching #13 on the US College Radio Charts.
From melodic, attention grabbers to rapid fire 90s alt-rock; where the band really shines is in their visceral live set. This reputation gained them coveted supports including Tropical Fuck Storm, Waxahatchee, Hinds, Hatchie and Major Leagues.
On ‘Starman’ Julia Why? reaffirm the importance of making music to make a difference.
