INTERVIEW: Nick Bennett from Stepson- Halloween Hysteria 2018

October 12, 2018

Stepson are a Melodic hardcore/punk outfit with origins in Brisbane, they are performing at Halloween Hysteria 2018 which is a festival of all things hard and heavy happening at the Jubilee Hotel in Fortitude Valley (Brisbane).

The bands guitarist, Nick Bennett, took a break from work commitments to talk about the festival and his thoughts on an interesting episode he and his bandmates experienced a few years back.

“It’s been a while since we’ve done something like this. We were lucky enough to do Invasion fest two years in a row, but we haven’t (performed at a festival) since December last year. So it’s very cool to be given the chance to do something like this in Brisbane, because that is something we haven’t done yet.”

Festivals, metalheads, punk bruisers and alcohol are key ingredients for a molotov cocktail of debauchery. Bennett certainly has a cautionary (yet hilarious) tale to share!

“We have a rule now… there was this one show in 2015 at the Cambridge in Newcastle. It was (like) $6 jugs of beer or something ridiculous… and I had four before the set plus another a couple of schooners and I was like, normally we didn’t really drink that much but it was Newcastle, I hadn’t been there, and we had a lot of friends there. It kind of just happened and I barely remember playing the set. Brock (Conry – Vocals) wanted to… he might have punched me in the head or he wanted to. I think he might’ve made me cry that night because he definitely yelled at me after that. (After that) we had a ‘no more than four beer rule’, but we behave now because that was a bad time.”

In the nicest possible way, which band does Bennet think will run amok and cause the most havoc during Halloween Hysteria 2018?

“Oh… I wish I had the line-up in front of me because a lot of the bands are going to be new bands to me as well, so that’s really cool. There’s lots of bands I’ve never heard of or seen that I’ll get to see and hear. We have had some crazy times with Jack (Bergin – Vocals) from Void of Vision. So we know those guys are a bunch of havoc and we are definitely looking forward to seeing them, they are always sick.”

If you are able to get to the show on Saturday 27th October… prepare for a night of loud, fast, beer drenched entertainment! Purchase tickets here.
